Omega 3 Sustainability

Although people in western societies are eating higher amounts of fish every year, it is still significantly less than the recommended amount. As of 2020, average western societies were consuming 5oz of fish per week, which is less than the recommended 8oz per the recommended Dietary Guidelines.

Consumption of fish or fish supplements may well be influenced by another important factor however, which comes through in survey data: concerns about sustainability.

Some 18 per cent of fish-eating adults said they were eating less fish because of sustainability concerns. Of these, 40 per cent said it was because of confusion about which fish are sustainable.

Not all fish oil supplements are created equal though. It is important to research particular brands to ensure that they are sourcing their fish from sustainable and reputable means.
